Dr. Ofshe is a Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of California – Berkley. Dr. Ofshe is also a member of the advisory board of the False Memory Syndrome Foundation, and is known for his expert testimony relating to coercion in small groups, confessions, and interrogations. Dr. Ofshe has testified in a number of high profile cases and he offers insights on interrogation techniques he believes can cause false confessions.

Dr. Chaski is the Executive Director of the Institute for Linguistic Evidence and taught a graduate seminar on Forensic Linguistics at George Washington University in Washington DC in the Spring of 2013. Mark McClish is a retired Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal with 26 years of federal law enforcement experience. During his career with the Marshals Service he spent nine years teaching interviewing techniques at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. After retiring from the Marshals Service in 2009, Mark started Advanced Interviewing Concepts. David E. Zulawski is a 1973 graduate of Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois.  After college, Mr. Zulawski spent two years with the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad as a Special Agent primarily investigating thefts from interstate shipments in northern Illinois.  He then accepted a police officer position with the Barrington, Illinois Police Department. As a police officer, his duties included patrol, investigations and evidence technician.  In 1978, He joined the staff of John E. Reid and Associates as a polygraph examiner, seminar instructor and was later named Director of the Police and Fire Applicant Screening Division at the firm. In 1980, Mr. Zulawski joined Reid Psychological Systems as a sales representative marketing paper and pencil honesty tests.

Mr. Zulawski is a founding partner of Wicklander-Zulawski & Associates, Inc. and is responsible for research and development.   He is a licensed polygraph examiner in Illinois and Indiana and has personally conducted over 9,000 interviews and polygraph examinations.  Mr. Zulawski also is Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Center for Interviewer Standards and Assessment and worked to develop the Certified Forensic Interviewer (CFI) certification examination.

David Zulawski has co-authored the text Practical Aspects of Interview and Interrogation, 2nd Edition, with Douglas E. Wicklander. In addition, he writes, along with Shane Sturman, an ongoing column in Loss Prevention magazine on topics relating to investigation and interviewing. Mr. Zulawski has also authored training programs and acted as a consultant during the writing and filming of numerous interactive computer video programs relating to interview and interrogation.  He has also testified as an expert witness in the areas of interview and interrogation.

Andy is a former Senior Detective and Senior Investigating Officer, having completed thirty years police service with the UK police, specializing in interviewing and investigation. 2016 – Dr. Ashley Lesko, MBA – What Front Line Managers Really Want– Lessons from Managers (to those that lead them) – $100

Ashley Lesko, MBA, PhD has a multi-faceted background working as a Naval Officer, Operations Manager, Financial Controller, and Professor. In her first career in the Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer, she led hundreds of sailors on two ships, a destroyer and cruiser, based in San Diego, CA and Norfolk VA. She was responsible for a multitude of leadership practices – from the training and development of sailors to succession planning for repair lockers for shipboard firefighting and management of annual review cycles.

She now leads Square Peg Solutions, a Leadership Development & Career Engagement firm specifically for new and front line managers – those that are in the forming years of their leadership career, or are the direct lines of leadership in the floors and main lines of business. She focuses on the managers at the individual level, and helps them design their leadership style both internally and externally.

She holds an Industrial Engineering degree from Georgia Institute of Technology, and an MBA from MIT Sloan. She received her PhD in Management with a focus on Leadership Motivation at Sullivan University. Her dissertation focuses on workplace engagement, career motivation, and new manager training. 2016 – Steve Z. Kaplan – The Reid Technique, The Risk of False Confessions, and Some Suggested Remedies – $100

Steve Kaplan is a senior of counsel at the Fredrikson & Byron, P.A. law firm in Minneapolis where he has represented individuals wrongly convicted of serious crimes as a result of coerced false confessions and false third-party witness statements. He will explore the reasons why the Reid interrogation technique, both as designed and as it may actually be implemented, poses the serious risk of wrongful convictions of innocent persons. He will also address possible reforms to reduce those risks. A question and answer period will follow his remarks.

Steve is a graduate of Bowdoin College and The University of Chicago Law School. Before entering private practice in Minnesota in 1980, he practiced with a law firm in Connecticut and served as a Department of Justice Tax Division trial attorney in Washington, D.C. During his 45-year career, he has concentrated his work in the areas of business and tax litigation, white collar criminal and regulatory agency defense work, and the pro bono representation of wrongfully convicted individuals. He is currently a member of the Innocence Project of Minnesota board of directors.

2016 – Dave Thompson, CFI – Dassey Interrogations Practical Review – $100

David Thompson, CFI is the Director of Investigations, Research and Innovation at Wicklander-Zulawski & Associates (WZ). He handles a variety of investigations, as well as conducting interviews and interrogations across a wide spectrum of clients and diverse cases.
